Raising our Grandchildren Conference May 30, 2008

  • Some studies have estimated that as many as 49 percent of grandparents in Wilkes-Barre City are primary caregivers to grandchildren. Census data shows the number of grandparents raising grandchildren in the entire Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area is significantly higher than the national average.
  • Oftentimes, grandchildren are left to grandparents because of drug addiction, a prison sentence or neglect by the parents. The focus of the conference was teaching grandparents where and how to find help within state social service agencies.
  • Because of the high numbers, State Senator Musto tried to raise awareness of the issue. He has proposed two laws this session that would make it easier for grandparents to get custody of grandchildren and navigate the social service system.

“I’m telling you, people don’t know enough about these grandparents raising grandkids,” he said.
